Working groups

Working Groups support the internal functioning and long-term coordination of the CGSG. They focus on administration, communication, governance, and member support, ensuring that the Specialist Group operates effectively.

Green Status Working Group

Leads: Jessica da Silva, Laura Bertola  and Julia Geue

Description: The Green Status Working Group has been established within the CGSG to support the CGSG Green Status Committee by addressing key questions and areas requiring further exploration. The group serves as a flexible platform for collaboration, where CGSG members contribute in ways that match their expertise and availability. Contributions may include collating input from the network, synthesising responses, translating genetic research for non-specialist audiences, and developing case studies that illustrate the role of genetics in species recovery. Where needed, the group may also initiate more in-depth investigations, in coordination with the broader CGSG community. Overall, the Working Group aims to provide practical, constructive, and accessible input related to the application of the Green Status of Species framework.

Communication (including website)

Description:

The Communications Working Group supports effective internal and external communication within the IUCN Conservation Genetics Specialist Group (CGSG). Its role is to improve information flow among members, strengthen engagement across the network, and enhance the visibility of CGSG activities, outputs, and opportunities.
This includes developing clear communication channels, supporting regular updates to members, coordinating website and newsletter content, and helping share relevant resources, events, and initiatives related to conservation genetics. The group also works to promote collaboration across regions and disciplines, ensuring that CGSG members remain connected and informed.

Membership

Description:

 The Membership Working Group supports the development and coordination of CGSG membership processes to ensure an engaged, diverse, and well-connected Specialist Group. Its role is to strengthen member participation, improve onboarding and retention, and help maintain clear and transparent membership procedures aligned with IUCN standards.

This includes supporting the induction of new members, developing and updating welcome and onboarding materials, and helping identify opportunities to broaden representation across regions, disciplines, and career stages. The group also works to foster active participation and ensure members are aware of opportunities to contribute to CGSG activities and priorities.

Capacity Building/Mentorship

Description: The Capacity Building Working Group supports the development of skills, knowledge, and collaboration within the CGSG and across the broader conservation community. Its role is to identify capacity gaps, promote learning opportunities, and strengthen the application of conservation genetics in research, policy, and practice.
